Abstract
Despite the fact that history education is often nation-centered in both contents and administrative regulations, it has been also the matter of supra- and international academic research, which helps overcome national particularities and information bubbles, broaden the perspectives and develop new approaches, especially those involving comparative aspects. This research is usually performed by historians reflecting also on broader issues related to the functioning of the knowledge of the past in larger society (conceptualized as history didactics, historical culture, and, at least to some extent, also as memory studies or public history). As for our knowledge, there are at least three major international academic societies focused on history education, International Society for History Didactics (ISHD), International Research Association for History and Social Sciences Education (IRAHSSE) and History Educators International Research Network (HEIRNET), of which ISHD is a long-standing member of CISH. They bring together hundreds of scholars dealing with history education in its various forms, levels and approaches on all continents. Each of them organizes its own annual conference and publishes its journal, participates in research and outreach projects, as well as performs various activities on-line.
The proposed session, convened by the ISHD, is aimed at bringing the leaders (and members) of these societies together in order to join efforts in discussing achievements, current trends and perspectives as well as challenges of research in history education, particularly on inter- and transnational level. The session will be facilitated by the German Society for History Didactics (KGD), as the national association in the host country of the CISH conference.
Individual panelists will briefly present their respective societies and discuss the following issues, based on their own research (not necessarily representing any “official” stance of the societies, but addressing important issues of mutual interest)
