Rethinking World and Global History in the 2020s

Abstract

The fields of world and global history have grown and changed in the past century. The resulting global historical discourse has unfolded at three main levels: curriculum in secondary schools as public education became nearly universal; national-patriotic interpretation of the past in this era of great powers and decolonization; and scholarly expansion of knowledge in existing and new disciplines. Presentations on this panel focus especially on changing curriculum in various national settings within the continents. The same presentations also address debates in national-patriotic formulations of the past (for instance, the re-emergence of a Western Civilization framework), and the emergence of new academic knowledge (notably in social, environmental, and biological history). As a result, interactions among these three areas of change emerge from the combined implications of the papers.
